THE DISPENSARIES

In December 1911, a sanitary inspector in Columbia, Mississippi, tried a new way of drawing in the public to be examined, treated, and educated about hookworm disease. He persuaded the county health office to donate space so that he could set up a dispensary, a term used to describe a free medical clinic.

County officials supplied money to buy medicine and to advertise the hookworm dispensary hours. The sanitary inspector recruited local physicians to assist with patients. He added hookworm displays, microscopes, and an examination area.
